In a heartbreaking incident, a 44-year-old man, Vincent Chunky Phahlane, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a two-year-old boy, Akanyang Maite, in Vaalbank on November 30, 2020. The Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Middelburg handed down the verdict after a series of disturbing events that shook the community.

Phahlane's actions unfolded when he stole his father's firearm and went in search of his ex-girlfriend, firing shots randomly at a school where she was reportedly working. The tragedy escalated as he later arrived at the home of another ex-girlfriend in Vaalbank, seeking her child. In a horrifying turn of events, he shot and killed the two-year-old nephew of his ex-girlfriend, leaving the community in shock.

After committing the crime, Phahlane fled and was on the run for over a month. However, on January 7, 2021, he surrendered to the police in Vaalbank, leading to his arrest. The legal proceedings involved charges of murder, attempted murder, theft of a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a public area.

Despite being granted bail in April 2021, Phahlane's fate took a decisive turn on June 5, 2023, when he pleaded guilty to the charges. The court withdrew his bail, and he remained in custody until his recent sentencing.

Phahlane received a life sentence for the murder, along with additional years for attempted murder, theft, discharging a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The court ordered that the sentences should run concurrently, and Phahlane was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
