In a heartbreaking incident in Morokweng, North West, police are currently investigating a murder case involving a 10-month-old baby girl who was discovered lifeless with head injuries and bruises. The incident occurred on Friday, January 19, 2024, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to initial reports, the baby's mother entrusted her care to a friend on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Later that evening, an 11-year-old neighbour, allegedly sent by the baby's grandmother, came to the friend's house to fetch the infant. Tragically, the next morning, the friend found the baby dead in her yard, prompting an immediate call to the police. Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) declared the baby dead on the scene.

The 11-year-old boy, who took custody of the baby, is currently under the supervision of his parents and will undergo evaluation by a social worker. Authorities will follow the procedures outlined in the Child Justice Act, 2008 (Act No. 75 of 2008) in dealing with the young boy. A post-mortem will also be conducted to determine the exact cause of the baby's untimely death.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident. He appealed to the community to allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served for the innocent lives lost.
